FAQ-SMPS

Industrial Automation

1. HOW TO SELECT SUITABLE SMPS FOR AN INDUCTIVE LODE/DC MOTOR?

Normally the starting current of any dc motor will be 5 to 6 times the steady state Current. So if the steady state current is 1A then the SMPS should be rated at atleast 6A. However on safer side choose current rating of 10 A.

2. WHAT IS THE SURGE PROTECTOR AND WHY DO WE NEED SURGE PROTECTION?

Surge means AC voltage going up drastically for few milliseconds. The circuit that protects this surge is called as surge protector. Surge protector is needed to protect the SMPS or charger from failure.

3. DO OUR SMPS HAVE EMI/EMC FILTERS?

We have EMI filters in all the models.

4. WHAT HAPPENS IF EARTH IS NOT PROPERLY CONNECTED?

If earth is not properly connected then there will be leakage current that will flow in the metal enclosure.

5. CAN SMPS BE USED IN 60 HZ FREQUENCY?

Yes, it can be used.

6. ARE MICRO POWER SMPS NOISE FREE?

No! in fact no electronic or electrical device is noise free. All the devices emit noise.

7.WHAT HAPPENS IF 24V DC AT THE OUTPUT IS SHORT CIRCUITED?

In all Micro Power SMPS momentary short circuit protection is provided. It doesn’t have permanent short circuit protection. So if there is permanent short circuit then SMPS will get damaged.

8. WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF MICRO POWER BRAND PRODUCTS?

Under normal circumstances, life time is beyond 25 years.

9. WHAT IS PFC?

PFC has got two meanings:
1) Power factor correction: Because of inductive component at input stage in any SMPS the power factor is not 1. Therefore to correct this and bring it near one the PFC circuit is used.
2) PFC also means potential free contact: It means the system should get the signal in case of AC failure, DC failure at the output or SMPS failure.
